- Dr. Pramode Verma, Director of the ECE's Telecommunications Engineering Program at OU-Tulsa and Williams Chair, was recently elected as a Senior Fellow of the International Telecommunications Education and Research Association (ITERA: www.itera.org) at their Seventh Annual Conference in Atlanta. ITERA is an organization of several universities, including the University of Oklahoma, that offer degrees in telecommunications.
- Dr. Havlicek was named the Williams Presidential Professor at yesterday's Faculty Awards Tribute. Dr. Hong Liu and Dr. Zhisheng Shi were also recognized at the Tribute for patents that were issued to them in 2008.
- IEEE Press announced an addition to their series lineup. The new series is The IEEE Press Series on Information & Communication Networks Security and the series editor is Professor Stamatios Kartalopoulos. Dr. Kartalopoulos served as the EIC for IEEE Press from 2001-2004 and was also a board member from 1993-2001 and 2005-2007. In addition to his service as a volunteer, he has been a prolific author publishing 8 books with IEEE Press. Volunteers who know of any potential authors for this fledgling series should contact Dr. Kartalopoulos directly.
- Professor J. R. Cruz has been selected as a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Communications Society for 2009-2010. His appointment is especially notable as it was the first time in the history of the program that the Communications Society appointed a candidate recommended by the Data Storage Technical Committee.

- Professor James J. Sluss, Jr. won the 2008 Edwin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award from the IEEE Education Society for his contributions to the Education Society in program development and financial management in October 2008. Click here for more information about the award.
- Professor J. R. Cruz was recognized on April 30, 2008 at the annual Tribute To The Faculty for more than 20 years of service to the University. Dr. Cruz joined ECE as a faculty member in 1982.
- Professor Zhisheng Shi was recognized as the first recipient of the Gerald Tuma Presidential Professorship on April 30, 2008 at the annual Tribute To The Faculty. Dr.Gerald Tuma was a faculty member in ECE for over 40 years and was a David Ross Boyd Professor (1966). Mrs. Eunice Tuma was present at the celemony and received special recognition from President Boren.
- The Fellowship Board of The Tau Beta Pi Association recently selected ECE undergraduate student Brandon Reed to receive a nationally-competitive Tau Beta Pi Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
- After a rigorous, competitive selection process, ECE PhD student Da Zhang was selected to receive a 2008 Cleo Cross International Student Scholarship. Da Zhang was recognized at a recent ceremony held at Boyd House, hosted by OU First Lady Molly Shi Boren. Da Zhang joined ECE in 2004 and maintains a 4.0 GPA. He has published four journal papers as first author, including two IEEE Transactions papers. His major professor is Dr. Hong Liu, Smith Chair in Biomedical Engineering and George Lynn Cross Research Professor.
- ECE Ph.D student Lee Elizondo won first place in the Engineering category for his poster paper "Quantum Effects in IV-VI Semiconductor Nanostructures" at the OU Student Research and Performance Day held on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
- Professor Cliff Fitzmorris received the Brandon H. Griffith Award for Outstanding Faculty Member at the OU College of Engineering Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008. Congratulations to Professor Fitzmorris on this award that recognizes his outstanding support of CoE student activities!
- After more than 22 years of service to OU, Professor Fred Lee has decided to retire effective 1/1/08. Professor Lee has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments while at OU which includes receiving the Amoco Good Teaching Award in 1991, the "Electrical Power Research Award of Excellence" from the Electric Power Research Institute in 1995, and the UOSA Outstanding Professor Award in 1999. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1998. Further, he has contributed significantly to the economic development of Oklahoma as Co-Founder and current CEO of Power Costs, Inc.
- The University of Oklahoma invites applications for two new faculty positions. These positions are being established to further advance the University's strategic initiative to develop an internationally preeminent weather radar program (Radar Initiative) in collaboration with Federal and corporate partners.
